Nationals Member for Rodney, Paul Weller, has welcomed moves to introduce a new approach to disability funding.
Mr Weller said the Coalition Government had established an expert taskforce to look at the establishment of a new National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) which would provide lifetime support for people with a disability.
“It is a long overdue and very welcome move, and one which will give great comfort to people who find themselves in such situations,” he said.
Mr Weller said the government was committed to a new approach to disability funding, based on the introduction of a universal safety net similar to those operated by the Transport Accident Commission and Worksafe.
This would be for people with permanent or severe disabilities.
“It will be designed to ensuring that Victorians living with disabilities, their families and their carers get the effective support and care they need.
“It applies especially to people either born with a disability or acquired other than in a workplace or car accident, and who currently have no automatic access to guaranteed support and care,” Mr Weller said.
Mr Weller said the NDIS Taskforce would be chaired with Mr Bryan Woodford, OAM, the former CEO of the highly respected disability organisation, Yooralla.
“It is pleasing to note that this is yet another of our pre-election commitments being honoured,” Mr Weller said.
